Exodus 14:21: "And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided."
Part of the Vintage Bible Stories Collection, a six-part series inspired by classic woodblock and ink illustration. The sea didn't part in an instant. God sent a strong east wind that pushed the water back all through the night, and Moses stood with his staff raised in faith while it happened. The patience must have been difficult. Moses likely doubted if it was a coincidental wind or the Lord's power. Austin wanted to depict Moses small in the composition to the large waves billowing beyond him as a reminder that true power comes from God, and sometimes it takes patience.
